Choose a Trusted Expert

Dr. Allan Thomas was inspired to become a dentist after a childhood accident fractured one of his front teeth. After several dental treatments that made him feel self-conscious about how his tooth looked, Dr. Thomas finally received a cosmetic solution. He decided right then that he wanted to make the same kind of amazing transformations for his own patients.

While Dr. Thomas is a trusted cosmetic dentist, he also offers premium general dentistry in Salt Lake City, UT. Patients trust Dr. Thomas because he:

  • Is committed to continuing education so he can provide his patients with the best possible solutions for their concerns
  • Is the only Utah dentist accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), meaning if you experience a dental emergency or are considering cosmetic dentistry, you’ll be in expert hands
  • Gives dental seminars at the University of Utah to help shape the next generation of dentists

If you’re looking for a new dentist or it’s been at least six months since your last checkup, request an appointment with Allan S. Thomas today. Our team will help you schedule recurring checkups to protect and maintain your oral health.

Our General Dentistry Services

Cleanings: Using special instruments, one of our dental hygienists will remove hardened plaque and tartar from your teeth that would be impossible to remove with floss and a toothbrush. Most patients should make time for a cleaning every six months.

Exams: During your twice-yearly checkups, Dr. Thomas will check for signs of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health concerns. Catching problems early can make treatment conservative and more affordable.

Oral Cancer Screenings: During your exam, Dr. Thomas will check for signs of oral and neck cancer. Early detection and treatment are essential for a good prognosis.

X-Rays: X-rays are recommended once a year to detect abnormalities and changes in your teeth. They also allow us to monitor your jawbone density.

Dental Sealants: Dental sealants are invisible plastic coatings that can be applied to molars to keep bacteria out of the grooves of your teeth. Ultimately, they help prevent cavities.

Fluoride Treatments: Fluoride can be applied to your teeth in the form of a gel or varnish to strengthen your enamel and reduce the risk of developing cavities.

Check-In

When you arrive at our Salt Lake City dental office, check in at our front desk. If it’s your first time with us, we may have some paperwork for you to fill out. Otherwise, you’re welcome to make yourself comfortable until your hygienist is ready.

Dental Cleaning

Your dental hygienist will use specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. They will then polish your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste and floss between each tooth. If you’re receiving a dental sealant or fluoride treatment, it will be applied at this time.

Exam

Dr. Thomas will examine your mouth for signs of cavities, oral cancer, and other concerns. Feel free to ask him any questions you have and tell him about any oral health concerns.

Schedule

If you don’t have any oral health concerns, you can schedule your next checkup with our team in six months. If you have a cavity or wish to address another restorative or cosmetic concern, we'll book your next appointment for you.

At-Home Care
Is Just as Important

While your twice-yearly cleanings and exams will go a long way toward protecting your overall dental health, an at-home oral hygiene routine is an important part of your care. We recommend following a routine that includes:

couple brushing teeth together

Brushing

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste to brush your teeth and tongue at least twice a day. Don’t forget to brush before you go to bed. This will help prevent plaque and tartar buildup while keeping your breath fresh.

woman flossing with a floss threader

Flossing

Bacteria commonly reside in the narrow spaces between teeth that are difficult to access with a toothbrush. Floss at least once a day to remove this bacteria and food debris.

man pouring cup of mouthwash

Mouthwash

We recommend using fluoridated mouthwash once a day or as needed. This can eliminate bacteria and help harden enamel. Swishing with water after meals can also help reduce bacteria.

By maintaining proper oral hygiene at home and attending your regularly scheduled cleanings, you can minimize the chance you'll need to undergo complex procedures like root canal therapy and dental implant surgery in the future.

FAQ About
General Dentistry

Why is general dentistry important?

Maintaining regular preventative dental care helps protect the long-term health of your mouth. It allows our hygienist to effectively remove plaque and tartar buildup, which is difficult with at-home care. It also allows our dentist to identify concerns like cavities and gum disease in their earliest stages when they are easier and more affordable to treat.

What dental technology do you use?

Dr. Thomas uses advanced technology to provide his Salt Lake City patients with the best possible care. With CBCT scanners, surgical guides, and 3D printers, diagnoses are more accurate, treatments are more precise, and patients are more comfortable. We work hard to stay up-to-date on the most current technology, techniques, and materials.

What happens if I have a cavity?

If you have a cavity, we'll promptly schedule you for an appointment. Then, Dr. Thomas will ensure your comfort before removing the decayed tissue from your tooth and placing a tooth-colored filling to strengthen it. With local anesthesia and optional sedation, receiving a filling is virtually painless and will ultimately protect you from further pain and widespread damage.
